Description
1996 Leaf Preferred Baseball Pack
A 1996 Leaf Preferred Baseball Pack contains six trading cards, featuring extra-thick 20-point card stock and one solid steel insert card per pack. Released by Donruss/Leaf in July 1996
Pack Break & Key Pulls
Pack Configuration: 5 premium base cards + 1 Steel insert.
Base Set Size: 150 standard-sized cards.
Key Stars Included: Ken Griffey Jr., Derek Jeter, Cal Ripken Jr., Frank Thomas, and Barry Bonds.
Key Rookies: Sean Casey, Matt Morris, and Mark Bellhorn.
The Core Insert: Leaf Preferred Steel
The main insert set mirrors the base roster and consists of unique, all-steel metalized cards. They feature silver-framed color player photos over a silver tinted, metallic background.
The Protective Film: All steel inserts were manufactured with a clear, peelable plastic film on the front to prevent scratching. In the hobby marketplace, unpeeled versions often command a premium from collectors, though unpeeling them reveals the full, mirror-like metallic shine.
High-End Parallel Versions
While a base Steel card was guaranteed in every pack, you could also pull rare, serial-numbered parallel variations of the steel inserts:
Steel Power -These are highly sought-after, eye-catching variations featuring a specialized die-cut lightning bolt design on the card perimeter. They are serial-numbered to 5,000 copies each.
Steel Gold - A much scarcer version of the metal inserts featuring a distinct golden finish rather than silver.
Top Key Players to Chase
If you are opening packs or sorting through a collection, the most valuable steel inserts and parallels feature the premier superstars of the era:
Derek Jeter (Card #40 — capturing his official AL Rookie of the Year season)
Ken Griffey Jr. (Card #3 / #52)
Barry Bonds (Card #6)
Cal Ripken Jr. (Card #4 / #17)
Chipper Jones (Card #33)
Frank Thomas (Card #8)
