Nicktoons trading cards showcase three of the most popular cartoons of the 1990s: The Ren & Stimpy Show, Rugrats and Doug. Arriving at a time when the hobby was evolving, its structure is simple. Perhaps too simple for changing tastes.
The base set has 88 cards. It’s split into three almost-equal sections, one for each show. Ren and Stimpy are the headliners, leading things off. They’re followed by Doug and his friends and closed out by the Rugrats. The design is unmistakably ’90s. The jagged frames give way to 3D-like boomerangs and polka dots around the outside. The result is bright, loud and a product of the times. Given how iconic these three shows are to a generation, it’s perfectly appropriate as well.
Every pack also has three inserts. The first is a sticker. These have the customary thick borders and die-cuts that were customary of the company’s movie and TV sets in the 1970s and ’80s.
Eleven Activity Cards add an interactive element. From pencil toppers to changing dirty diapers, these have the variety to match the different shows.
Rounding out 1993 Topps Nicktoons are 12 sheets of Tattoos.
